He married Amelia Adel Wood December 11, 1863 in Baraboo, Sauk Co. Wisconisn, daughter of William Wood and Mahala Johnson. She was born January 28, 1847 in Smithfield, Madison Co. NY, and died April 18, 1923 in Tripoli, Wisconsin.

Notes for William Henry Harrison Norton:

William Norton and Amelia Wood Norton (my great-great grandparents) lived in Lake and McHenry County, Illinois. Great-great grandpa William was born in August 17, 1842 in Illinois and died in 1929 in Tripoli, Wisconsin. He married Great-great grandma Amelia in 1863. He and his family moved to Tripoli, Wisconsin from Illinois in 1898. Great-great grandfather, William was wounded slightly in the chin in Sherman's March to the Sea during the Civil War.

Great-great grandmother, Amelia helped establish Brantwood, Wisconsin's school. She and her sister, Cordelia were both teachers. William and Amelia had a homestead grant from President McKinley in 1898 (Brantwood, Wisconsin). The Woods (great-great grandma Amelia's family) have been traced back to the 1700's in New York.

Great-great Grandpa and Grandma, William and Amelia had 7 sons and 2 daughters. All the boys had different lifestyles. Great-grandpa Pat and great uncle Wood were both woodsmen, hunters and farmers. Great uncle John went to Jamacia and died of the flu epidemic in 1918. Great uncle Bernard went back to Engleside, Illinois, where he lived his entire life. Great-uncle Oscar dissapeared from where he lived in Libertyville, Wisconsin. One story is he was with the Mafia and another is there was another woman.

From Marion Shark

William and Amelia began raising their family in Antioch, Il (Lake County) and Grey's Lake (McHenry County), IL. All of the children were born there. President McKinley was giving away homesteads in northern Wisconsin to veterans, so William who was a Civil War veteran received a land grant in 1898 and the family moved north to a farm in Brantwood (Price County, WI. Amelia helped to start the school in Brantwood. In 1919 they moved to a farm in Tripoli (Lincoln County) WI.

Tom Norton, William's grandson loved to recall his visits to the farm. Tom was a real Dennis the Menace at first---there is a story about him chasing the hens and roosters around the pen to watch them jump in the air. Also another about a daring bareback ride on a pig's back with a knife in his hand. Fortunately for the pig his attacker was discovered soon enough and forced to dismount. He must have been taught some proper farm etiquette and behavior because he had further memories to relate about later events. He loved grooming the horses and putting a "spit and shine" on the driving equipment and buggy. Grandma Amelia wanted everything shiny for her trip to church.

He said that his grandparents were frugal people, especially his grandmother. He recalled how she scolded her husband once for not collecting enough money on his egg route. She had raised the price of eggs by one Penney per dozen and either he forgot or wasn't informed of it. When he returned home with the money she said, "Will you old fool, you'll have to re-run the route and collect another Penney for every dozen of eggs". And that's how it was done---a very "tongue-in-cheek" Will had to explain to the customers that he had come back for the extra pennies.

William was very proud of his military service in the Civil War. Tom would sit in awe while his grandfather told stories about it. Will used to hold out his right hand and say, "This is the hand that shook the hand of Lincoln". He has been in an inspection of troops when the president came through and shook hands with every man there.

They both died in Tripoli, WI and are buried behind a log church there.

Obituary of Mary Louise Little Norton:

"Merrill Daily Herald," Merrill, Wisconsin:

"MRS. LEWIS NORTON......Mary Louise Little, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hiram Little, was born at Sibley, Iowa on June 24, 1883, and passed away at her home north of Brantwood in the Town of Knox, last Saturday at midnight. She was married to Lewis (Pat) Norton March 17, 1900 just 26 years to the day of her burial. Their home has been in and around Tripoli most of this time. About two years ago they moved to the Town of Knox the home at which the husband was born. To the union were born 14 children, 12 of which were here today. Lewis Harrison, Frank Carlyle, Arthur Ernest, Glen Kenneth, Thomas Marion, Bernice Adele, Kermit, William Stephen, Norman, David Wood, George Elliott, John Allen, Beatrice Louisa, and May. Several of the older children are married, and these children with the husband survive. Besides the immediate family she leaves 5 sisters and one brother: Mrs. Wood Norton, Tripoli; Mrs. Sweet, Athelstane, WI; Mrs. Sweet, Marinette Cty, WI; Mrs. Buntz, Tony, WI; Mrs. Jawson, Winterset, IA; and Charles Little, Pern, IA.

The funeral was held on Wednesday afternoon at the Congregational Church at Tripoli, the Rev R G Heddon officiating, and was attended by a large gathering of friends who filled the church to its capacity, for she was most highly esteemed by all who knew her. Her sacrifices made in behalf of her family have been recognized and appreciated by her friends, and it seems almost a calamity that a mother so badly needed in her home should be removed by death. The burial took place in the Town of Somo Cemetery just west of Tripoli."
